The Journey to Senior Recreation Design

Aoife discovered her passion for senior outdoor recreation in 2008 while working as a park ranger with Fingal County Council. She was observing visitors in the parks — watching older adults navigate uneven paths, struggle with unclear signage, sit on uncomfortable benches. Most people just accepted these barriers as inevitable. Aoife didn't.

That experience sparked a shift. She completed her degree in Geography and Environmental Management at University College Dublin, then spent eight years with Age Friendly Ireland developing accessible walking programmes. It wasn't just about making routes easier — it was about making them genuinely enjoyable. Routes that celebrate Dublin's heritage. Routes designed around actual visitor needs, not assumptions about what older adults can or can't do.

Her work has directly influenced park management practices across Dublin's major green spaces. She's conducted extensive accessibility audits at St Stephen's Green and Iveagh Gardens, identifying barriers that others had overlooked. At sherifranklin Limited, she combines that field knowledge with digital expertise to create detailed, practical guides that help seniors discover Dublin's most rewarding outdoor experiences.

What drives Aoife is straightforward: age shouldn't diminish the joy of exploring Dublin's heritage landscapes. Her routes prove that thoughtful design — considering rest points, terrain, gradient, shade, interpretation — transforms outdoor access for older visitors.

Areas of Specialisation

Combining field experience with landscape interpretation and accessibility design

Route Design & Accessibility

Creating low-impact walking routes that balance terrain, distance, and rest facilities. Every route accounts for mobility variations — what works for one visitor might not work for another.

St Stephen's Green & Iveagh Gardens

Intimate knowledge of Dublin's two most significant heritage gardens. She's mapped every path, identified quiet areas, and knows which spots offer the best views with minimal walking effort.

Accessibility Audits

Evaluating parks and routes for physical barriers, safety concerns, and usability. Her audits identify not just problems but practical solutions that parks can actually implement.

Landscape Interpretation

Bringing Dublin's parks to life through history and storytelling. She doesn't just tell visitors where to walk — she explains the heritage, ecology, and meaning behind Dublin's green spaces.

Older Adult Engagement

Understanding the specific needs, preferences, and capabilities of mature visitors. She designs experiences that respect independence while offering genuine support.

Practical Guide Writing

Translating field knowledge into clear, detailed guides. Her writing is specific — exact distances, rest point locations, terrain descriptions — not vague marketing copy.

What Drives the Work

Design Around Reality

Aoife doesn't design for hypothetical users. She watches actual visitors — how they move, where they rest, what interests them. Routes are built on observation, not assumptions. A steep path isn't "fine for most people." It's a barrier that excludes real visitors.

Specificity Over Marketing

Her guides include exact distances, rest point locations, terrain descriptions, and shade availability. Not because it sounds good — because older adults need this information to make real decisions about what they can actually do. Vague marketing copy isn't helpful. Precision is.

Independence First

Good design respects autonomy. It offers support without creating dependence. Rest points aren't patronizing extras — they're essential infrastructure. Clear signage isn't babying visitors — it's respecting their right to navigate independently. Age doesn't diminish capability if the environment is designed properly.

Heritage Matters

Dublin's parks aren't just recreational spaces. They're repositories of history, ecology, and community memory. Routes should help visitors understand and appreciate that heritage. A walk through St Stephen's Green becomes richer when you know the stories embedded in those paths and gardens.

"Age shouldn't diminish the joy of exploring Dublin's heritage landscapes. Good design removes barriers without removing the adventure."
