Aoife discovered her passion for senior outdoor recreation in
2008 while working as a park ranger with Fingal County Council.
She was observing visitors in the parks — watching older adults
navigate uneven paths, struggle with unclear signage, sit on
uncomfortable benches. Most people just accepted these barriers
as inevitable. Aoife didn't.
That experience sparked a shift. She completed her degree in
Geography and Environmental Management at University College
Dublin, then spent eight years with Age Friendly Ireland
developing accessible walking programmes. It wasn't just about
making routes easier — it was about making them genuinely
enjoyable. Routes that celebrate Dublin's heritage. Routes
designed around actual visitor needs, not assumptions about what
older adults can or can't do.
Her work has directly influenced park management practices
across Dublin's major green spaces. She's conducted extensive
accessibility audits at St Stephen's Green and Iveagh Gardens,
identifying barriers that others had overlooked. At sherifranklin
Limited, she combines that field knowledge with digital
expertise to create detailed, practical guides that help seniors
discover Dublin's most rewarding outdoor experiences.
What drives Aoife is straightforward: age shouldn't diminish the
joy of exploring Dublin's heritage landscapes. Her routes prove
that thoughtful design — considering rest points, terrain,
gradient, shade, interpretation — transforms outdoor access for
older visitors.
